Williams Sisters and Racism..

I believe Venus Williams and her father drew the attention to themselves. They both knew after she (Venus) dropped out of the match people were very upset. But they still walked down the 20 or so steps to their seats on court level. There had to have been a different way to get to their seats, but they picked the way that would cause a scene. By doing this they flustered Serena Williams for the first two sets of her match. Yeah she came back and won, but she was trying too hard at first to try and quit the crowd. I also do not think it was necessary for the Williams father to put up the “black power” sign. He was trying to egg on the haters. I do feel the Williams sisters should go back to Indian Wells to compete. You have to be the bigger person and show you are bigger than the situation.

Moving on to something that Dr. Spencer talked about just before class ended last Thursday about the N Word and there being a speaker saying it should be eliminated. I would agree with that, the N Word should not only be used by whites but not by the blacks. I do not understand why all of a sudden it is okay to say this in the black community. When ever I am near or around two or three blacks talking the N word is dropped about three or four times. I do not understand. Also whites are discriminated against as well. Racism works both ways.

  1. First of all, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. It is Serena Williams that played in the Indian Wells match you are referring to and Venus Williams who walked down the steps with her father to watch her sister play. Secondly, I completely disagree that they picked out the route to their seats thinking that it would cause a scene. Venus and her father had every right to use those steps to get to their seats and should not be criticized for it. Also, I would like to mention that Serena may not have played her best at first because she was flustered, but I highly doubt that the crowd reaction would have been any different if Venus had taken a different route to her seat. The crowd was inappropriate in booing Serena and applauding her mistakes.

  2. Well thanks for the catch and your opinion.. As you can tell I am a HUGE tennis fan...You think I am wrong well I think you are wrong..The crowed booed so what... Brett Favre got booed when he entered the field Sunday and through out the game. Booing is part of sports.. Have you ever been to a event?

  4. I just meant that you didn't know what you were talking about because you didn't even know which sister was hurt and which played the match... but I see you've changed that

  6. Well, I see that I missed a bit of a match going on back and forth here...

I have never been to Indian Wells, but I have been to another stadium that was like it at UCLA, and there really were not other ways to access the seats. In fact, the seating is similar at the U.S. Open as well as the Australian Open. So, I doubt there was another way to enter the stadium. But I also do not think Venus and Richard would have wanted to draw attention to themselves. As for the black power sign that Richard gave, I am sure that he felt justified in doing that. From what I have seen and heard of that match, it was really ugly, and I cannot imagine what it must have felt like for Venus, Serena, and/or Richard. I know I was saddened by what I saw at the time!
